After all the star pass catchers who graced ``Monday Night Football'' for 35 years, the final memorable receiving performance was left to - a linebacker?

New England's Mike Vrabel has made a habit of finding the end zone as a temporary tight end, and he did it twice in lifting the Patriots past the New York Jets 31-21. It was quite a headline-grabber for ABC, with Vrabel providing a unique touch to a game with little distinction other than its standing as the network's finale.

``I'm trying to fly under the radar the best I can,'' Vrabel said. ``You turn around and see Tom throwing to you ... just don't mess it up.

``One touchdown's awesome, but two,'' he added, shaking his head. ``I tried to give the football to Santa Claus in the stands, but someone took it away from Santa.''

The loss ended ABC's 35-year run with nice symmetry. It began with a 31-21 Jets loss to Cleveland on Sept. 21, 1970. Next year, the Monday games move to ESPN and NBC takes over the showcase telecast on Sunday nights.

``They can take football away from ABC on Monday night,'' announcer John Madden said after the game, ``but they can't take away the memories.''

Otherwise, it was a routine performance by the AFC East champion Patriots (10-5) as they tune up for the playoffs. Even Vrabel making like Jerry Rice wasn't entirely out of character - he has eight career catches, all for touchdowns, including three this season, which is tied for second on the Pats.

Not that the Jets (3-12) seemed to know how dangerous Vrabel can be as he slipped behind David Barrett for scores of 1 and 2 yards in New England's fourth straight victory and sixth in a row over the Jets. Vrabel also had a sack, making him the first player with two TDs and a sack in a game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

``It was points for the team, but I wish it was me,'' said veteran Troy Brown, a true wideout. ``It all counts. Hey, he's got good hands.''

And good enough moves to get behind cornerback Barrett.

``That's what makes it worse for me. A linebacker? I'd rather a tight end catch the ball than a linebacker,'' Barrett said.

The Patriots have won 18 of their last 19 games after Dec. 1 and are hitting stride while seeking an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl crown.

In brisk winds, Tom Brady, the league's leading passer, guided a ball-control offense that had an absurd edge in yardage (321-171) and time of possession (43:21). He went over 4,000 yards passing for the first time in his superb 6-year career.

Corey Dillon had two 1-yard runs and New England converted four fourth-down plays.

The only negative for the Patriots was a left leg injury to linebacker Tedy Bruschi late in the first quarter, but he walked out of the locker room on his own after the game.

The Patriots used some prime-time trickery for their first two touchdowns. Vrabel's first score capped a 13-play drive. He did it again midway in the second quarter. Not bad for a defensive mainstay.

New England got the ball back immediately after his first score when Asante Samuel intercepted Brooks Bollinger's weak pass and returned it to the Jets 34. But Ty Law, the Jets' lone Pro Bowl selection, stepped in front of David Givens to pick off Brady's throw and sped down the sideline 74 yards for the longest touchdown of his 11-year career; he was with New England for the first 10 seasons.

Vrabel's second score made it 14-7 and Dillon capped a 78-yard march with his first score for a 21-7 halftime lead.

An even more impressive march of 74 yards and 15 plays took up 9:24 of the third quarter, with Dillon adding his second TD. Adam Vinatieri added a 26-yard field goal.

Laveranues Coles caught an 11-yard TD pass on fourth down early in the fourth quarter for New York, which otherwise looked very much like a contender for the first overall draft choice. With one game remaining, the Jets are one of four teams with 12 losses. Only Houston has 13.

In the final minutes, the NFL's two oldest quarterbacks, 43-year-old Doug Flutie of the Patriots and 42-year-old Vinny Testaverde of the Jets, made token appearances. Testaverde's 27-yard TD pass to Coles closed the scoring and made him the only quarterback to throw for a touchdown in 19 straight seasons.

``Just to get in and play, for me you couldn't have scripted a better ending,'' said Testaverde, who said he reminisced with Flutie at the end of the game.

Meadowlands authorities banned the sale of beer in the stadium after several incidents of unruly fan conduct when the Jets lost a Sunday night game to New Orleans on Nov. 27. Late in the game, one Jets fan held up a ``We Want Beer'' sign. He came up as empty as his team.

Jets-Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins' late-season surge came too late.

Backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels sparked a fourth-quarter rally for the second time in three games, and the Dolphins earned their fourth consecutive victory Sunday by beating the New York Jets 24-20.

But Miami (7-7) was eliminated from the playoff race when Pittsburgh and San Diego won.

``We're just trying to find something to build on,'' said Marty Booker, who caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Rosenfels for the go-ahead score. ``We want to finish the season strong, and hopefully it'll carry over to next year.''

Injury-plagued New York (3-11) merely wants to finish the season. The loss in the Jets' final away game left them 0-8 on the road for the first time. The only other time they went winless on the road was in 1964, when they went 0-7.

``There are a lot of bad stats this year,'' coach Herman Edwards said.

It was small consolation that the Jets led on the road for the first time this season. That came when Brooks Bollinger and Doug Jolley connected on a 60-yard touchdown pass to make the score 17-10 midway through the third quarter.

New York's lead lasted 10 minutes before Ricky Williams tied the game with a 23-yard run. On the Dolphins' next possession, Rosenfels and Booker put them ahead to stay.

Replacing an injured Gus Frerotte to start the second half, Rosenfels went 6-for-13 for 99 yards. In his last appearance two weeks ago, Rosenfels came off the bench and rallied Miami from a 20-point deficit in the final 12 minutes to beat Buffalo.

Despite their longest winning streak since 2003, the Dolphins know there's room for improvement. After all, they needed a fourth-quarter comeback against a bad team to reach .500.

``Right now we're average - 7-7,'' Rosenfels said. ``But it's nice to win four in a row.''

The Jets, who came into the game last in the NFL in points, scored 17 in a row after falling behind 10-0. And they tried to rally in the final moments, moving to the Miami 14-yard line before Bollinger threw four consecutive incompletions.

Bollinger finished 28-for-42 for 327 yards and two touchdowns. But Miami had six sacks - three by Jason Taylor - and the Jets lost three fumbles and botched a short field goal attempt.

``It's hard to look at anything right now and feel good about it,'' Bollinger said. ``You just look at the negatives.''

The Jets took their only lead with their longest gain of the season. On the first play following a punt, Bollinger threw deep to Jolley. It was Bollinger's longest completion, and Jolley's first touchdown this year.

With the Dolphins trailing 17-10, Rosenfels moved them 61 yards for the tying touchdown on Williams' run. Miami forced a punt and quickly struck again when Frerotte went deep to Booker with 11 minutes left to make it 24-17.

``We gave up too many big plays,'' Jets linebacker Jonathan Vilma said. ``That cost us the game.''

Mike Nugent kicked a pair of 42-yard field goals for New York. But when he lined up for a 20-yard attempt with the Jets trailing 7-0, holder Ben Graham was unable to handle a low snap, and Miami's Yeremiah Bell recovered.

Miami scored first when Frerotte hit Chris Chambers with an 8-yard touchdown pass. The completion was one of three third-down conversions in a 13-play drive.

A disputed third-down penalty on Vilma for roughing the passer started a 52-yard Miami drive that led to a field goal for a 10-0 lead.

Among those impressed by the Dolphins' turnaround under coach Nick Saban is former coach Don Shula, who holds the NFL record with 347 victories.

``Anybody that's a Dolphins fan feels they're headed in the right direction,'' Shula said.

Raiders-Jets

Curtis Martin walked through the Jets training room before their game against Oakland in a black sweat suit, his pads and uniform stored for the season.

John Abraham stopped him, looked into his eyes and said, ``Curt, this don't even look right. I've never seen this.''

The New York Jets came out with a 26-10 victory, snapping a seven-game losing streak behind Abraham and third-stringers Brooks Bollinger and Cedric Houston.

Still, nothing looked quite right Sunday.

It was their first game since 1998 without Martin, the venerable running back who tried to play through immense pain in his right knee for the last 10 weeks before finally giving up.

Now his season is over, along with his streak of 119 straight regular-season starts and his quest to become the first player in NFL history to start a career with 11 straight 1,000 yard seasons.

``This is new for me, I'm like a fish out of water,'' Martin said. ``But at the same time, I realize there's no way I can be out there. I knew I couldn't perform. I haven't been able to perform like Curtis Martin should perform.''

Martin instead watched Houston run for 74 yards on 28 carries and a 2-yard score. Bollinger set a team record for yards rushing by a quarterback with 56, eclipsing the old mark of 53 set by Richard Todd on Dec. 14, 1980 against New Orleans. He also was 14-of-26 for 119 yards.

Abraham had two sacks that caused fumbles, leading a defense that forced four turnovers and sacked Marques Tuiasosopo six times. Former Jets back LaMont Jordan, the understudy to Martin for four years, also failed to deliver many big plays for the Raiders (4-9), finishing with 49 yards on 14 carries.

The 32-year-old Martin's consistency and durability have vaulted him to No. 4 on the all-time rushing list, even though he has taken a backseat to bigger name players throughout his career.

Last season, Martin became the oldest running back to win the rushing title. He came into training camp in the best shape of his life, but things got ugly quickly. Martin got hurt against Miami in Week 2 with what the team called a sprained knee.

The Jets (3-10) proceeded to lose six key players on offense for the year. Martin should have joined them on the sideline much sooner, but he wanted to do whatever he could to help. By Week 6, he said he was playing at 40-45 percent.

Martin hit a low point last week at New England, when he took an injection before the game so he could play. The only other time he did that was in his first game with the Jets in 1998 because of intense back pain.

He met with coach Herman Edwards earlier this week to discuss the situation.

``Herm and I sat down and talked about it. He said to me for us to have this conversation, it must be a bad situation,'' Martin said. ``There's no way you'd be sitting in Herman Edwards' office talking to me if this thing wasn't drastic.''

Martin skipped practice all week and made the decision Saturday to sit out for the season.

In all, Martin has missed five regular-season games. Including playoff games, Martin had started 126 straight. He last missed a game on Oct. 11, 1998, when he sat out against St. Louis with a thigh injury.

``When I look at the offense for one guy to keep me going, it's Curtis,'' Abraham said. ``He comes out every week and plays his heart out. It hurt to see it ending like this.''

Martin wants to return next season, but he might not be in the Jets plans. If they get a high enough draft pick, they could select Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and release Martin, or they could ask him to restructure his contract and take a reduced role.

While Martin sat out, Jordan had the perfect chance to show the Jets what they were missing. Afterward, he criticized the decision to switch to Tuiasosopo, who started ahead of an ineffective Kerry Collins, and complained he didn't get the ball enough. It didn't help the Raiders had 13 penalties for 88 yards. Coach Norv Turner said he was sticking with Tuiasosopo.

``I'm very frustrated,'' Jordan said. ``I sat back and watched a rookie get double the carries I had. Bringing in a new quarterback, you would think there would be more of an emphasis on the running game.

``We've got a long plane ride home with the same excuses that we say after every loss: defense plays well, we have a bunch of penalties and we didn't get the run game going. It's the same thing that's been said all year long.''

Saints-Jets

The Saints trudged back to the Meadowlands for the second time this season. Ironically enough, they fared better as the road team.

Aaron Brooks threw three touchdown passes, and New Orleans broke a six-game losing streak with a 21-19 win over the Jets on Sunday night, sending New York to new depths of despair.

The Saints (3-8) returned to East Rutherford, having played their ``home'' opener here against the New York Giants after Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans area and ruined the Superdome. The Saints lost 27-10, and receiver Joe Horn later said the NFL was making a ``mockery'' of the team.

``I told them we're 1-1 at home,'' Saints coach Jim Haslett said. ``It's a better feeling tonight.''

Brooks made sure they came out with the victory this time, handing the Jets a sixth straight loss of their own. He threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Devery Henderson with 8:32 remaining for the winning score, and finished 17-of-23 for 181 yards.

Mike Nugent made a career-high four field goals for the Jets (2-9), but his 53-yard attempt with 15 seconds left came up short.

``We faced so much adversity this year, that we're always playing an away game,'' Brooks said. ``This was just another place we had to come to to try and get a win.''

The Saints had to sweat it out at the end. The Jets got the ball back at their own 46 with 1:37 remaining and drove to the Saints 34. On second-and-11, Brooks Bollinger fumbled the shotgun snap, picked it up and lost 3 yards. He got 3 yards on the next play, but it was a difficult field goal to make for any kicker.

But if the Jets hadn't messed up on second down, they could have gotten closer for Nugent. Snapping problems have been an issue all season, especially since Pete Kendall moved to center after Kevin Mawae got hurt.

``In that situation, I have to get him a ball he can handle. I have no excuse,'' Kendall said.

Nugent, who connected from 29, 45, 41 and 38 yards, thought his last kick was good.

``When I hit it, I thought it was going to go,'' Nugent said. ``Right before I looked up, it kept sailing and sailing and then at the last second it just didn't get the last few feet.''

Though the Jets and Saints are the worst two teams in the league in turnovers, they played a clean game. Bollinger went 19-of-28 for 251 yards, and his pretty 27-yard touchdown pass to Justin McCareins in the third quarter gave the Jets a 16-14 lead. It was the first touchdown for the Jets since the fourth quarter of a loss to San Diego on Nov. 6.

The Jets would have never scored their touchdown without a running into the kicker penalty on Will Smith early in the drive, giving New York a first down. The Jets had another touchdown reversed just before halftime. Bollinger threw a 28-yard pass for Laveranues Coles in the corner of the end zone, but replay officials overturned the reception because Coles bobbled the ball as he was going down.

Coles turned away from reporters and out of the locker room without commenting.

Bollinger ended up throwing for a career high and the most yards for a Jets quarterback since Chad Pennington had 264 in the opener against Kansas City.

``It's just disappointing,'' Bollinger said. ``You just want a win so bad, obviously since I've been starting I haven't won one so I really wanted to help us win a game. To come up short again, it's tough.''

The Jets built their lead to 19-14 when Nugent made his 38-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter. For once, New York showed some life on offense. It was the once reliable defense that let the Jets down.

New Orleans promptly answered, driving 81 yards on 11 plays to take the lead for good on Henderson's touchdown reception.

``We're proud of getting a victory,'' Brooks said. ``Breaking a six-game losing streak is the best feeling this team can have at this point.''

New York scored in the first quarter for the first time since Week 2 against Miami, when Pennington was still the quarterback. Nugent connected on a 29-yard field goal for an early 3-0 lead. That equals the same amount the Jets scored in their previous two games combined.

The rare New York lead was brief. The Saints took the ensuing possession and moved 70 yards, completing the drive when Brooks tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Donte' Stallworth. The Saints took a 14-6 lead when Brooks added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Zach Hilton.

``We still almost let it slip away,'' Horn said. ``I'm hoping for the game we score 35 and they score 13. Every week is a nail biter to the end and I know our team is better than that.''
